Witnessing Impact: UN-Habitat Tunisia Hosts an Official Visit by Alwaleed Philanthropies Team to Sousse and Beni Khalled, Tunisia.
UN-Habitat Tunisia hosted an official delegation from Alwaleed Philanthropies to Tunisia from September 23 to 26, 2024. The visit, led by representatives from Alwaleed Philanthropies, concluded the waste management project in Sousse and Beni Khalled, implemented between 2023 and 2024 and in partnership with Alwaleed Philanthropies Global.
This collaborative initiative between UN-Habitat Tunisia and Alwaleed Philanthropies “Global” seeks to support the governorates of Sousse and Nabeul to improve their solid waste systems. The project's purpose was to improve the urban environment and public health while placing waste management at the center of local economic development.
During the visit, Alwaleed Philanthropies team visited the municipality of Beni Khalled in Nabeul Governorate, as well as Sousse, to meet with key actors and beneficiaries of this initiative. The team was accompanied by local authorities, project partners, NGOs, and the UN-Habitat Tunisia team.
The visit to Beni Khalled, on September 24th, included a composting demonstration at a local school, as well as an exhibition showing the citrus waste value chain, showcasing the work of local artisan women around citrus. In Sousse, on September 25th, the team engaged in discussions with informal waste collectors the “Moujaddidin” to learn about their needs and the benefits they have derived from the project. This visit underscored the ongoing commitment of Alwaleed Philanthropies Global and UN-Habitat Tunisia to promoting sustainable waste management and empowering local communities.
