Prince Alwaleed Receives UNICEF Executive Director
HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global", received at his office in Riyadh Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and an accompanying delegation that included Dr. Ibrahim El-Ziq, UNICEF Representative to the Gulf Area, Ms. Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Mr. Neeraj Solanki, UNICEF Programs Regional Office Director and Ms. Abrar AlOsaimi, Executive Assistant, UNICEF – Gulf Region.
The meeting was also attended by Ms. Heba Fatani, Senior Executive Manager, Corporate Communications Department, Dr. Nahla Nasser Alanbar, Private Executive Assistant to HRH the Chairman, Ms. Intisar Al Yamani, Executive Manager, Corporate Communications Department, Ms. Nauf Alrawaf Executive Manager of International Projects at Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" and Mr. Fahad Bin Saad Bin Nafel, Executive Assistant to HRH the Chairman.
The meeting began with Mr. Lake thanking Prince Alwaleed for giving him and the delegation the opportunity to meet with him, Mr. Lake also referred to the strong relationship between the Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" and the UNICEF. Moreover, the two discussed the Global Polio Eradication Initiative whereby Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) in a unique partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Co-Chaired by Mr. Bill Gates to bolster the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" pledged $30 Million to that effort.
The MOC was jointly signed by Prince Alwaleed and Mr. Bill Gates. This global commitment is based on a well-defined strategy aimed at reaching a common goal for improving the quality of life for individuals around the world.
Details of the collaboration will be announced as part of The Global Vaccine Summit “Celebrating Progress, Saving Lives” that will take place on April 24th, 2013 in Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and in partnership with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Mr. Bill Gates. Furthermore, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will be participating in the summit.
In March 2013, Prince Alwaleed and Dr. Ibrahim El-Ziq, signed a memorandum of understanding “MOU”, which works for children’s rights, their survival, development and protection, to support a UNICEF project to provide quality basic education for girls in Yemen. Under the agreement, Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" will donate $250,000 to 15 schools in Aden, Abyan and Hodeidah provinces. The money will be used to refurbish classrooms and provide child-friendly spaces within a safe and healthy infrastructure. It will also be put towards teacher training and ensuring child and gender equality.
