In a Humanitarian Initiative, Prince Alwaleed Visits AlZaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan
In light of the Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global"’ effort to provide the assistance where needed, HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global", visited AlZaatari Syrian Refugee Camp in Jordan on Tuesday April 22nd, 2014.
HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal spent a day engaging with Syrian refugees and aid workers during a humanitarian visit to the Zaatari Refugee camp in northern Jordan. Accompanying Prince Alwaleed were a senior team from the Foundation as well as a team from Kingdom Holding.
By visiting the Zaatari Camp, Prince Alwaleed is endeavoring to boost international attention to the plight of the refugees and ignite a fresh wave of compassion even as the conflict drags on with no end in sight. Prince Alwaleed and the Foundations team wanted to visit the refugees in person to show their sympathy and support.
The refugees visited by Prince Alwaleed are part of a humanitarian disaster that has grown out of the three-year-old Syrian civil war and has caused an estimated 2.5 million Syrians to flee their home country. Upon Prince Alwaleed’s arrival, he was received by Ms. Maria Calivis, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Mr. Michel Servadei, Deputy Commissioner and Mr. Daniel Hardy – Security Adviser for the UNICEF. The visit commenced with a tour of the camp’s Multi-Activity Center, followed by the camp’s school where HRH was briefed on the different approaches used to improve the level of children’s education. UNICEF estimates that there are currently some 320,000 Syrian children living as refugees in Jordan, including at least 50,000 in Zaatari camp.
During the tour, Prince Alwaleed was informed of the UNICEF’s “WASH” program, which ensures that every child has access to water, sanitation and hygiene education, and the refugees’ response to the program. The group toured water supply facilities, school classes for children, and sat with Syrian families whose emotional stories moved one and all. In conclusion to the tour, His Highness extended a helping hand to refugee families by providing emotional support and gaining a better understanding of how to alleviate their pain.
After the visit, Prince Alwaleed remarked, “The scale of human tragedy seen here is almost too large to comprehend. Refugees are not a faceless group but individuals who want a homeland where they can live in freedom and peace. We pray for their soon return to a stable and tranquil Syria. In the meantime, we will not forget the friends we have met today and will continue to help until their suffering is over.”
“It is impossible to hear the tales of the refugees and not be caught up in the tragedy of their circumstances but also inspired by their resilience. These are brave and courageous families who have endured so much yet did nothing to deserve their fate. We are humbled and honored to be part of the international effort to help them. Alwaleed Philanthropies "Global" have always been responsive to humanitarian crisis and as our Chairman has promised, we will continue to provide assistance and show mercy and kindness for as long as they need us,” said Secretary General of the Foundations, Ms. Abir A. Kaki.
