With an endless passion for philanthropic activities that foster understanding, unity, wellbeing and opportunity for all humankind, Alwaleed Philanthropies was born.

Alwaleed Philanthropies consists of three philanthropic organizations: Alwaleed Philanthropies Global, focusing on philanthropic and humanitarian projects around the world, Alwaleed Philanthropies Lebanon, which is focused on the social and community needs of Lebanon, and Alwaleed Philanthropies Saudi Arabia, which focuses on the needs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

For over 35 years, we have supported thousands of projects in over 90 countries and served millions of people across the globe.

And our work is only just beginning.

2015 marks our 35th anniversary, and, with it, an exciting new era for Alwaleed Philanthropies. And the era begins with a theme that encapsulates the very essence of our work: unity.

This year, we relaunch The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundations, unifying its three philanthropic institutions under one common umbrella – Alwaleed Philanthropies –  one in Saudi Arabia, one global, and one dedicated to meeting the social and community needs of Lebanon;  with one shared vision: to contribute to a world of tolerance, acceptance, equality and opportunity – for all.

Three organizations. One unified goal.

However, all are unified in their goal to support and initiate projects under our four focus areas: the promotion of a better understanding and greater harmony between different cultures and religious faiths; the development of communities, the empowerment of women and youth; and the provision of relief to the victims of natural disasters. The means applied are necessarily varied and reflect a belief in bringing innovative and creative solutions to age-old challenges and more immediate global problems.

Without boundaries

Empowering women & youth, developing communities, creating cultural understanding & providing disaster relief.

Today, my motive for the work of Alwaleed Philanthropies remains as it was more than thirty years ago, stemming from a firm belief in Prophet Mohamad's (May Allāh honor him and grant him peace) saying: “The wealth of a man will not diminish by Sadaqah (charity)”. It also derives from the conviction that the myriad challenges facing the world cannot be left to governments alone. It requires the concerted efforts of each and every one of us who can participate in the search for solutions on both a local and a global scale.

Meeting the challenges of tomorrow

With the mounting problems of understanding, equity, poverty and disasters facing the world, the challenges confronting all charitable institutions will become ever more daunting. With a proven history of creating positive change, Alwaleed Philanthropies will continue to face the world’s most pressing issues with unwavering dedication, commitment, and intelligence.

1980s - First steps

The story of Alwaleed Philanthropies began over thirty five years ago, when the young Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal took his first steps along his path as investor and businessman in Riyadh in the early 1980s.

The Prince’s passion for philanthropic work grew out of a belief in the obligation of ‘giving’ or ‘sharing’, which has deep roots in Arab culture and tradition. Prince Alwaleed embraced the true meaning of Zakat, Islam’s obligatory duty to give back to the community.

As his business began to grow, so did his philanthropic work, and Zakat became an integral part of his daily life.

1990s – Giving back to society

The Prince’s philanthropy surged over the years as he went about expanding his business under the banner of Kingdom Holding Company. By the 1990s, Prince Alwaleed had emerged as a leading global investor and billionaire with investment revenues from destinations across the world. As his businesses profited, Prince Alwaleed continued to give back to society, particularly where humanitarian aid was badly needed to meet the basic needs of people.

2009 - Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation

In 2009, as the scope of the philanthropic activities grew, it was recognized under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Affairs and renamed the Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation.

2015 Alwaleed Philanthropies

After three decades of philanthropic work, the scope of Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundations work evolved and adapted to reflect shifting circumstances, changing times.

As a result, the broad philanthropic work of the The Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundations and its three philanthropic institutions were unified under one name – Alwaleed Philanthropies – with one shared vision: to contribute to a world of tolerance, acceptance, equality and opportunity – for all.

Today, Alwaleed Philanthropies works at both a global and local level and consists of three highly focused philanthropic organizations – one global and one dedicated to meeting the social and community needs of Lebanon. Both are unified in their aim to provide philanthropy ‘without boundaries’ – regardless of race or religion – and concentrating their efforts across four focus areas: ensuring cultural understanding, developing communities, empowering women and young people, and providing vital relief in times of crisis.

Alwaleed Philanthropies will now build on its rich history of creating positive change to build a future of tolerance, acceptance, equality and opportunity – for all.
