Embracing Social Entrepreneurship

Thursday, 1 January, 2015

In line with its objective of bringing about tangible positive change, Alwaleed Philanthropies has embraced social entrepreneurship – the concept of using entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to achieve social change.

Through venture philanthropy, venture capital finance and high- technology business management techniques are used to achieve philanthropic goals. In this arena, Alwaleed Philanthropies has partnered with non-profit organizations such as Build Change and Echoing Green, and supported programs such as Deworm the World and Acumen Fund.

  • Build Change is an international non-profit organization that aims to greatly reduce deaths, injuries, and economic losses caused by housing collapses during earthquakes in developing countries.
  • Echoing Green supports social entrepreneurs worldwide by providing start-up funding, customized support services, and access to its global network of champions.
  • Deworm the World is a program that aims to end the public health threat of intestinal worms. Intestinal worms affect an estimated 870 million school-age children worldwide.
  • Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty.
